CORRECT OPERATION

The front universal joint permits the drive shaft to remain connected to the rear wheels, regardless of their movement over road irregularities. These U-joints are connected to a slip yoke that in turn is placed over splines on the transmission output shaft. The slip yoke can slide in and out of the transmission as necessary in order to dynamically adjust the drive shaft length. When the rear wheels hit bumps, the drive shaft must lengthen in order to remain connected to the transmission.

The rear universal joint transmits rotary motion from the drive shaft to the differential, regardless of the relative angle of these two devices.
